The area's name, Alam El Roum, originates from its historical significance as a Roman observation post and resting place during their occupation of Egypt. The Romans would leave a flag or banner there, hence the name.
The State of Qatar has entered into a formal agreement with the New Urban Communities Authority for the complete development of this 4,900-acre (20.2 million square meter) plot of land. The entire area will be transformed into a world-class coastal city with a unique design and comprehensive services and amenities.
